Chapter 6

My head was still hurting from the thumping the Judge gave me, but he obviously pulled his punch with the shotgun. I wasn’t bleeding, which was a blessing given the attraction that the undead had to blood.

They cleared out a few zombies from the pier as we docked and we all exited the boat. As we made our way onto land, Eric pointed out where we could find some vehicles. I wasn’t very fond of the path Eric was paving for us, as when Tommy and company came back they would have to make their way by other means. There wasn’t much choice however, as we couldn’t keep stalling and risk running into them. I wasn’t interested in being in the middle of a firefight unarmed.

The Judge ushered us to the Hummer that was left behind. He had his men shoot out the tires to the H3, rendering it disabled. The danger we were in was just transferred to the rest of the group tenfold. Whether or not anything happened to the kids, I was going to take the first opportunity I was given to personally judge the Judge with a bullet in his fucking head.

The Hummer was normally spacious, but now felt quite cramped with all of us inside. Having the barrel of an assault rifle stuck in your ribs gives you a strange feeling of claustrophobia. Something told me that the Judge didn’t plan on returning with the same amount of people. There was no doubt that this was intended as a one-way trip for us.

There were a few scattered zombies milling about, which were mowed down by the immense size and weight of the vehicle. Eric continued to give directions, keeping a positive tone and seemingly oblivious to the cues that our usefulness was coming to an end.

As the driver pulled onto our street, Eric diverted them to Greg’s house. Greg was long dead, as was his dog that had bitten my Kate and taken her from me. It was painful to return here and the large sigh I gave didn’t fall on deaf ears as the Judge looked back at me. I wasn’t sure what Eric had planned in bringing us here, but I was sure he was going to have to play his cards sooner than later.

As we pulled up, you could see the burned hulk next door – my old house. As the Judge and his men got out of the vehicle, they took in their surroundings with caution. We were ordered to stay where we were for the meantime, as one of the men approached the front of the house. They looked across the street several times, as it was obvious that they could hear the generator running.

Why in the hell did Tommy leave that on? Had they somehow come back to the house? No. They wouldn’t have come back without the vehicles.

The Judge and the armed man had a short discussion and we were promptly pulled out and ordered to the ground.
